McCarthy, 27, of Cliff Walk, Canning Town, East London, pleaded guilty to kidnapping his former wife Kerry Joy, also 27, while the latter was in a hospital awaiting breast augmentation surgery. The accused didn’t want his wife to have breast implants.
“You are, in plain English, a bully. This is a serious offence. It is the second time you have gone into hospital premises and committed a crime against your partner,” the judge said.
Kerry earlier checked in at St. Bartholomew Hospital in London for the cosmetic procedure. She was talking to hospital worker Lola Ali about her black eye that she also got from her husband when the latter barged in and dragged her out.
“Don’t do it. I like you as you are,” James was quoted as saying.
Luckily, Kerry managed to escape.
“He was clearly in some state of agitation and shouted at Miss Joy. I saw him pick her bag up and he told her ‘I like you as you are. I will kill you now.’ It was certainly a frightening experience. I saw how frightened the lady looked,” recounted Ali.
Police later learned it was the second time James attacked his wife in the hospital. He was earlier jailed for three months for punching his then pregnant wife in the abdomen and twice in the face. The court said he had a history of violence dating back to 1999.
His recent outburst was triggered by his anger at his wife getting breast implants.
“This defendant did not want his wife to undergo an augmentation operation. He did not think it was necessary. He was also worried about the surgery itself. He went to the hospital to talk her out of having the operation. When she refused he reacted in the way he did,” his lawyer Michael Gomulka said.
Kerry has since separated from James and lives with their nine-month-old son. To this day, she has not had breast implants.
